UC Davis documents:

Jan 17, 2020 - Letter from Provost and Vice Provost to all faculty:

"...recruitment committees constituted by participating deans will initially be examining two anonymized documents: 1) Statements of Contributions to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; 2) either the Statement on Research or the Statement on Teaching. As in the previous grant, recruitment committees will evaluate and score the two statements, and they will again have full discretion to determine which applicants will move forward for further evaluation with the complete dossiers. "

Contrast with previous statement by Vice Provost to Inside Higher Ed, 11/12/18:

they"can document the sorts of things I’m doing that go beyond the bounds of expectations with regard to equity, diversity and inclusion. But the converse is not true. I’m not penalized for not doing these things and not writing about them.”

"This proposal builds on UC Davis’s 2018-19 grant, which demonstrated that a structured and deliberative approach to using contributions to diversity statements together with  conventional selection criteria leads to a pool of candidates, and ultimately faculty hires, that will have the largest impact on equity and inclusion for the campus’s diverse student body. Having demonstrated this through their 2018-19 pilot study of eight new faculty searches, the 2019-20 project will test and institutionalize their findings through approved searches planned for the 2019-20 academic year."

"Requiring that recruitment committees only read the Contributions to DEI Statements and Statements of Research first (or, if the academic units request, Statements of Teaching), and then score them using rubrics. Only faculty scoring above a threshold determined by the Recruitment committee will be further considered."

6/13/19 -  letter from the UC Davis Provost re DEI statements for hiring:

Commitment to Diversity and Excellence

Investing campus resources in faculty hiring serves as a catalyst for transformative change. Therefore, I ask that you give distinct attention to your faculty’s diversity throughout the process, including:

...

        • using the required diversity statements by scoring them with rubrics provided by Academic Affairs,               and require applicants to achieve a scoring cutoff to be considered,

The Provost in this letter indicates that DEI statements with rubrics should be used in all hiring. This is a basic change in the Academic Personnel process, and is being implemented with no discussion or consultation with the Davis Division of the Academic Senate.

UC Davis 2018-2019 rubrics for diversity statements, by School:

These rubrics direct how to interpret the DEI, awarding points according to a fixed scale.  Candidates with low point totals are to be removed from the applicant pool, irrespective of their excellence in research, teaching and public service.
